지난 주일 새가족 환영회가 있었습니다. 새가족팀과 함께 여러분이 함께 해 주셔서 6분의 새가족을 기쁨으로 환영하는 시간을 가졌습니다. 전반기에 10분의 새가족을 환영하는 기쁨이 있었는데 후반기에 이렇게 다시한번 새가족 환영회를 가질 수 있어서 너무 감사했습니다.
새가족 환영 프로그램의 일부로 새가족 반을 1시간 정도 운영하고 있습니다. 새가족반에서는 다른 것 보다도 감리교단에 관한 소개를 주로 다루게 됩니다. 교포사회의 특정상 여러 교단의 교회를 다니던 분들이 우리 교회를 오게 되는 경우가 많아서 감리교단에 대해서 간단히 설명해 드리는 시간을 갖고 있습니다. 새가족반 서두에 말씀드리듯 감리교단이 다른 교단보다 더 좋다는 메시지를 전하려고 하는 것이 아니라, 감리교회에 오셨으니 감리교회에 대해서 조금 더 분명히 알고, 우리 감리교회의 좋은 점에 대해서는 자랑스럽게 여기셨으면 하는 바람으로 새가족반을 진행해 오고 있습니다.
저는 감리교회가 참 좋습니다. 특별히 장로교단에서 태어나 장로교회에서 자랐고, 장로교 신학교까지 나온 저에게 감리교단이 처음에는 많이 어색했지만, 점차 하나님의 은혜를 강조하는 감리교의 신학과 신앙의 틀, 그리고 감리교의 창시자인 요한 웨슬리 목사님의 삶을 배워가면서, 그 가운데 드러난 은혜의 모습이 너무 좋아졌습니다. 그렇게 감리교회 목사로 살아온 지가 어느덧 30년이 넘었네요. 이번에 우리 교회의 새가족이 되신 여러분들도 저와 같이 기쁨과 감사가 넘치는 감리교인이 되실 수 있기를 축원 드립니다!
지난 주부터 가을 성경공부가 시작되었습니다. 모두 17분이 등록해 주셔서 신나게 성경공부를 시작할 수 있었습니다. 이번에는 요한복음을 함께 공부합니다. 성경에서 제가 어렵게 생각했던 책이 요한복음과 로마서, 그리고 계시록이었습니다. 그래서 목회초기에는 이 책들을 피해서 설교하곤 했는데 계속 피할 수만은 없겠다는 생각에 도전을 해 보게 되었습니다.
로마서는 세 번 정도 설교해 보니 그 속에 담긴 바울의 마음이 저에게 다가왔고, 계시록은 좋은 참고서를 만나서 그 틀을 상세히 보게 되었고, 요한복음도 매일 한 장씩 3분 메시지를 만들어 보내는 묵상 작업을 두 번, 설교 시리즈로 한번, 그리고 성경공부로 한 번 더 들여다보는 가운데 요한복음의 “마음”이 읽혀지게 되었습니다. 혹시 저처럼 요한복음이 어렵게 느껴 지셨던 분들이 계시면 이번 기회에 함께 해 보시면 어떨까 합니다.
평생 배운다는 말이 있습니다. 나이가 들면서 생각하는 것도 힘이 들어 뭔가를 배운다는 것이 버겁게 느껴져 아예 생각을 안 하게 되는 것 같습니다. 저도 이번에 페루를 다녀 오면서 스페인어를 좀 배워야 하지 않을까 하는 생각이 들려고 하는 찰나 ... 매몰차게 끊어 버리고 말았는데 ... 새로운 언어를 배우는 것이 치매 예방에도 좋다니 오래전에 관뒀던 한문공부라도 다시 시작해 볼까 하는 생각을 해 봅니다. 요즈음 유튜브에 기타 강습 비디오가 가끔 뜨던데, 조금 들여다 보다가도 손가락에 쥐가 날 것 같아서 금방 꺼버리곤 합니다만 ... 쉬운 것 한두가지라도 새로운 테크닉을 연습해 봐야겠다는 생각도 해 보고요.
그러는 가운데 내년 사순절에는 하루에 한 구절 씩, 총 40구절을 외워보는 “말씀 캠페인”을 생각해 보는데 ... 우리 모두, 할 수 있겠죠?

Last Sunday, we had our Newcomers’ Welcome Reception. Together with the Newcomers Team, we joyfully welcomed six new families to our church. Earlier this year, we were blessed to welcome ten new families, and I am truly grateful that we were able to hold another welcome gathering in the second half of the year.
As part of the welcome program, we have a one-hour Newcomers’ Class. In this class, rather than covering many topics, we mainly focus on introducing the Methodist Church. Since many people in the Korean-American community have previously attended churches of various denominations, we take time to explain the basics of Methodism. As I always mention at the beginning of the class, our purpose is not to say that the Methodist Church is better than others, but rather that, since we are now a member in the Methodist Church, it is important to know about it and also to take pride in the wonderful aspects of our Methodist tradition.
Personally, I truly love the Methodist Church. Having been born and raised in the Presbyterian tradition and even having graduated from a Presbyterian seminary, the Methodist Church felt unfamiliar at first. But over time, I came to appreciate the Methodist emphasis on God’s grace, the theology and framework of its faith, and the life of its founder, John Wesley. It has now been over thirty years since I began serving as a Methodist pastor. I sincerely pray that those who have newly joined our church will also become Methodists with overflowing joy and thanksgiving, just as I have.
Our fall Bible study began last week with 17 participants, and we started our sessions with great enthusiasm. This fall, we are studying the Gospel of John. Among all the books of the Bible, I once found John, Romans, and Revelation to be the most difficult. In the early years of my ministry, I used to avoid preaching from them, but I realized I couldn’t keep avoiding them forever—so I decided to take on the challenge.
After preaching through Romans three times, I came to see Paul’s heart within it. Through great commentary, Revelation also began to make sense to me. And after working through the Gospel of John twice through daily “3-minute message” devotional programs, once in a sermon series, and once again through a Bible study, I have finally begun to grasp the “heart” of the Gospel of John. If any of you have ever found John difficult, I warmly invite you to join us this time.
There is a saying that we should keep learning throughout our lives. Yet as we get older, even thinking can be tiring, and learning something new can be burdensome - so we simply stop trying. After my recent trip to Peru, I thought maybe I should start learning Spanish. But just as that thought arose, I quickly brushed it aside. Still, since learning a new language is said to help prevent dementia, I feel that at least I should try something, like studying classical Chinese characters, which I quit long ago. Lately, I sometimes come across guitar tutorial videos on YouTube. I turn it off right away, because just looking at it gives me cramp in my fingers. But it wouldn’t hurt to practice one or two new techniques just for the joy of learning, wouldn’t it?
For next year’s Lenten season, I’m debating whether to do a “Scripture Memory Campaign” where we memorize one verse each day for forty days - a total of forty verses. I am not sure whether our brains will be able to handle that. But we should try it, right?
