빛나는 아스펜
콜로라도 가을은 사시나무 (Aspen) 단풍이 유명합니다. 그런데 울긋불긋한 중북부 단풍나무에 익숙한 저는 아스펜 나무 단풍이 멋있다는 말을 잘 이해할 수가 없었습니다. 특별히 사진으로만 보았을 때 노란색만 가득한 단풍은 울긋불긋 화려한 동부지방의 단풍에 비하면 그리 인상적이지 않은 것이 사실입니다.
그런데 지난주 단풍이 유명하다는 과넬라 패스를 지나가게 되었는데, 밝은 햇살에 황금빛으로 반짝이는 아스펜 입사귀들은 과연 감탄을 자아낼 만했습니다. 그러고보면 직접 보고 경험해야 그 가치를 알게 되는 것들이 있는 것 같습니다.
이번주부터 연말 교인총회를 위한 여러 회의가 있게 됩니다. 그 첫 시작이 오늘 주일 (5일)에 있게 되는 인선위원회입니다. 우리 교회가 속한 감리교단에는 4개의 중요한 위원회가 있습니다. 교회의 재산을 관리하는 재단 이사회, 교회의 재정을 관리하는 재정위원회, 목회자등 유급 스태프에 관한 일을 맡아 결정하는 목회위원회, 그리고 매년 이 위원회에서 일할 위원들을 공천하는 인선위원회입니다. 각 위원회는 5명에서 9명 정도의 위원들이 3년의 임기로 섬기게 되는데, 매년 위원회의 1/3 되는 위원들이 (그러니까 2~3명 정도 되겠네요) 임기를 마치고, 그만큼의 새 위원들을 뽑아 교체하게 됩니다. 그리고 임원회장, 평신도 지도자, 연회평신도 대표등의 임원회 임원들을 인선위윈회에 공천하고 교인 총회에서 투표로 선출하게 됩니다.
인선 위원회를 준비하면서 지난 일년간 섬기셨던 임원 명단을 다시 한번 보게 되었습니다. 그분들이 지난 일년간 감당했던 여러 사역들을 다시금 상기해 보니 그저 감사한 마음뿐이네요. 교회에서 일어나는 일들을 “한미엽서”등 웹페이지를 통해서 될 수 있는 한 많이 나누려고 하지만, 사진으로 담아낼 수 없는 일들이 또한 많습니다.
매 주일 늦은 시간까지 헌금계수를 하고 주중에도 나와서 교회 재정을 알뜰하게 돌보려고 애쓰는 재정위원회, 변기가 새는 작은 일부터 2주 후에 시작되는 친교실 공사와 같은 큰 일까지, 때론 골치 아픈 법적 문제를 해결하기 위해서 수십통의 전화와 이멜이 오가야 하는 일을 묵묵이 감당해 주는 재단이사회, 교회의 풀타임, 파트타임 사역자들을 찾고, 위해서 기도하고 돌보는 세심한 일을 사려 깊게 감당해 주는 목회위원회, 그리고 각부서와 기관을 통해서 수고해 주시는 많은 이들을 떠올려 보게 됩니다.
1년여전에 “나는 반딧불”이라는 노래가 유명세를 탔습니다. 발표되기는 수년전에 된 곡인데 몇 년이 지나 빛을 보게 된 노래라고 합니다. 그 노래 가사가 이렇게 맺습니다. “그래도 괜찮아 나는 빛날 테니까!”
때론 드러나지도 않고, 제대로 인정받지도 못하는 것이 교회 일이 아닌가 합니다. 그래도 그 일이 실제로는 황금빛 아스펜 나뭇잎처럼 빛나는 일이라는 것을 알고 있습니다. 지난 일년간 수고하셨고, 또 앞으로 일년간 수고해 주실 모든 임원들과 위원 여러분께 감사를 드리며, 때론 인정을 받지 못하더라도 “그래도 괜찮아! 나는 빛날 테니까!” 라는 믿음으로 정진해 주시기를 부탁드립니다. 감사합니다!

Shining Aspens
Autumn in Colorado is famous for its aspen foliage. But for me, who grew up accustomed to the multicolored maple leaves of the Northeast, I never quite understood why people said aspen leaves were beautiful. Especially when seen only in photos, a forest filled with yellow leaves didn’t seem as impressive as the bright reds and varied colors of the East.
However, last week I drove through Guanella Pass, well-known for its fall colors, and the golden aspen leaves shimmering under the bright sunlight truly took my breath away. It reminded me that there are some things whose value we can only appreciate when we see and experience them for ourselves.
Beginning this week, we will have a series of meetings in preparation for the year-end Church Conference. The first of these will be the Nominations Committee meeting today. In the Methodist tradition to which our church belongs, there are four important committees: the Board of Trustees, which manages the church’s property; the Finance Committee, which oversees church finances; the SPRC (Staff Parish Relations Committee), which makes decisions regarding pastors and paid staff; and the Nominations Committee, which annually recommends members to serve on these committees. Each committee is made up of about 5 to 9 members, serving three-year terms. Every year, about one-third of each committee (usually 2–3 members) completes their term, and new members are elected to replace them. In addition, positions such as the Church Council Chair, Lay Leader, and Annual Conference Lay Delegate are also nominated by the Nominations Committee and elected by vote at the Church Conference.
While preparing for the Nominations Committee, I took another look at the list of officers who have served over the past year. As I recalled the many ministries they faithfully carried out, I was filled with nothing but gratitude. Although we try to share as much as possible through our church website, there are so many things that photos cannot capture.
The Finance Committee, for example, stays late on Sundays to count the offering and comes in during the week to carefully manage the church’s finances. The Trustees quietly handle everything from small repairs like fixing leaking toilets to large projects such as the fellowship hall renovation scheduled to begin in two weeks, as well as complicated legal issues that sometimes require dozens of phone calls and emails. The SPRC thoughtfully takes on the delicate responsibility of seeking, praying for, and caring for our full-time and part-time staff. And beyond these, there are countless others serving faithfully through various ministries of the church.
About a year ago, a song titled “I Am a Firefly” gained popularity in Korea. Although it was written years earlier, it only came into the spotlight after some time. The song ends with these words: “It’s okay, because I will still shine!” Sometimes church work seems to be unnoticed and unappreciated. Yet in reality, it is radiant - shining like the golden leaves of the aspen. I give thanks to all the officers and committee members who have served this past year and to those who will serve in the coming year. I encourage you to press on in faith, even when your work goes unrecognized, with the spirit of that song. “It’s okay! I will still shine!” Thank you!
