금년은 유난히 많은 선교사님들과 교제를 나눌 수 있었던 복된 해였습니다.
먼저, 부활절 직후 튀르키예의 탁요셉 선교사님의 방문이 있었습니다. 선교사님을 통해서 아프간 난민들의 어려운 상황 가운데서도 하나님께서 어떻게 역사하고 계시는지를 듣게 되었고, 이를 계기로 6개의 (곧 8개로 늘어날 예정) 아프간 가정교회와 연결되어 활발한 후원이 이뤄지게 되었습니다. 할렐루야!
그리고 사순절 기간에는 네팔의 구복음 선교사님과 동역하는 산토스 형제의 소식을 듣고 그를 위해 기도하고 후원하는 가운데 구 선교사님과 많은 소식을 나누게 되었습니다. 그로 인해 구 선교사님을 후원한지는 일년도 안 되었지만, 굉장히 오랫동안 알고 지낸 사이처럼 느껴지게 되었네요. 어려운 시간을 기도의 동지로서 함께 한 끈끈한 동지애라고 할까요? 아직 만나 뵙지는 못했지만 그 누구보다도 가깝게 느껴지게 된 것이 하나님께서 인도하신 인연이 아닌가 하는 생각이 드네요.
지난 8월 선교부흥회를 통해서 강영철 선교사님을 만나게 된 것도 참으로 감사했습니다. 약자와 소외된 이들을 위해 32년간 한 자리를 지켜온 선교사님의 사역은 큰 감동을 주었고, 그 인연으로 우리 교회가 Amerasian Christian Academy의 한 학생에게 전액 장학금을 지원할 수 있게 된 것도 감사한 일이었습니다. 또한 9월 페루 비전트립을 통해 홍종애 선교사님을 만나게 되었는데, 그분의 사역을 통해 우리가 미처 알지 못했던 하나님의 크고 넓은 역사와 능력을 새롭게 배우며 믿음이 더욱 깊어지는 귀한 시간이 된 것 역시 하나님께 감사를 드립니다.
그리고 다음 주일에는 통일소망선교회 대표이신 이빌립 선교사님을 모시고 말씀을 듣게 됩니다. 통일소망선교회는 2012년부터 탈북인들을 구출하여 아시아에 있는 예제원 (예수제자훈련원)에서 돌보며 전도하고 양육하는 사역을 하고 있습니다. 지금까지 약 1,500명의 탈북민을 구출했고, 그중 대부분이 예제원에서 3개월간 복음 교육을 받고 예수를 믿게 되었다고 합니다. 또한 30개의 탈북인 교회를 매달 지원하며, 탈북인 신학생과 대학생들에게 장학금을 지급하여 미래 북한 복음화를 책임질 지도자를 세우는 일에도 힘쓰고 있다고 합니다.
특별히 이번에 탈북인 자녀들을 위한 대안학교인 ‘남북사랑학교’ 학생들로 구성된 중창단이 미주 순회공연을 오게 되었는데, 그 공연을 마친 후 선교사님 가정이 시간을 내어 우리 교회를 방문하게 되었습니다. 작년에 우리 교회에서 보낸 헌금으로 예제원을 위한 차량 구입이 이뤄져서 그에 대한 감사의 인사도 드리고 싶어 하셔서 이번 방문 계획을 세우게 되었습니다. 선교사님은 탈북 과정 중 중국 공안에 체포되고 북한 감옥에서 수감 생활을 하는 등 많은 간증을 가지고 계십니다. 이번 방문을 통해 탈북인 선교뿐 아니라 북한 복음화를 위해 하나님께서 어떻게 “부지런히” 일하고 계신지를 함께 듣고 배우는 시간이 되기를 바랍니다.
강영철 선교사님께서 이번 달 ACA 선교 보고서에 우리 한미교회에 대해서 말씀하면서, “지역적·국가적·국제적 선교에 적극적으로 참여하고 있는 교회”라고 적어 주셨네요. 그런 평가를 받는 교회가 됨이 너무나 감사합니다. 여러분~ 수고 많으셨습니다! 할렐루야!

This year has truly been a blessed year, full of fellowship with missionaries.
Right after Easter, Rev. Joseph Tark and his wife from Türkiye visited us, giving us a deeper understanding of the hardships faced by Afghan refugees. Through this connection, our church was able to partner with six Afghan house churches (soon to be eight), and support for them has been actively carried out. What a reason for thanksgiving!
During Lent, we received news about Brother Santos, who worked alongside Missionary Gu Bok-eum in Nepal. As we prayed and offered support for Brother Santos, we also shared a lot of conversation with Missionary Gu. Although it has been less than a year since our church began supporting his ministry, it already feels as though we have known Pastor Gu for a long time. Perhaps it is because of the bond formed as prayer companions during difficult times—though we have never met in person, I feel closer to him than almost anyone else.
In August, we were blessed to hear the messages of Missionary Jame Kang-McCann during our Mission Revival. His ministry, faithfully serving the weak and marginalized for over 32 years in the same place, deeply moved us. Through this new connection, our church was able to provide a full scholarship to a student at the Amerasian Christian Academy—another great blessing!
In September, our Peru Vision Trip team also had the privilege of meeting Missionary Jong-ae Hong. Encountering her ministry opened our eyes to the vastness of God’s work that we had not known before. We were challenged, inspired, and our faith in God’s mighty power was strengthened and deepened.
Next week, we will welcome Rev. Philip Lee, President of the “Hope for Unification Mission.” Since 2012, this mission has been rescuing North Korean defectors, caring for them in a third country at the Yesu Discipleship Training Center (Yeje-won), evangelizing, and discipling them. To date, about 1,500 defectors have been rescued, and nearly 900 of them came to faith in Jesus after receiving three months of gospel training at Yeje-won. In addition, the mission provides monthly support to 30 small North Korean refugee churches, while also offering scholarships to about 20 seminary students and 20 university students who are NK refugees, raising up leaders who will one day serve in the evangelization of North Korea after reunification.
This past month, Rev. Lee led the tour of the children’s choir from “South-North Love School,” an alternative school for the children of North Korean refugee families, across the United States. After the tour, Rev. Lee and his family set aside time to visit our church. Last year, our church sent an offering that enabled Yeje-won to purchase a vehicle for its mission, and he especially wanted to come and say thank-you in person. Rev. Lee himself is a North Korean refugee, with many powerful testimonies, including being arrested by Chinese police and imprisoned in North Korea. We look forward to hearing from him, not only about ministry among refugees, but also about how God is already at work for the evangelization of North Korea.
In his most recent mission report, Missionary James Kang-McCann described our Korean American Methodist Church as “a congregation already actively engaged in local, national, and international mission.” What a blessing it is to be given as such recognition! Thank you for all your prayers and sacrifices for making that possible! Thank you and praise the Lord!
