교회가 자체 건물이 있다는 것은 참 대단한 축복입니다. 교회 건물이 없던 때의 설움을 기억할 때 교회 건물이 얼마나 큰 축복인가는 두말할 필요가 없을 겁니다. 그런데 건물을 유지하기 위해 그만한 책임이 따라오는 것 또한 사실입니다.

우리 교회의 경우도 작년에 3만불을 들여서 파킹장 resurfacing을 해야 했고, 또 어린이 예배실, 성가대실을 새롭게 넓히느라 2만여불이 들어갔습니다. 금년에는 5만여불을 들여서 친교실 공사가 대대적으로 있게 됩니다. 부엌의 하수구가 자꾸 막히는 일이 있어서 알아보니 친교실로 지나가는 하수구 파이프가 잘못되어서 바닥을 들어내고 파이프를 새롭게 설치해야 한다는 조사 결과가 나왔습니다. 이 일을 재단 이사회와 임원회에서 논의한 결과 친교실 바닥을 들어내는 공사를 하는 김에 친교실과 부엌, 그리고 부엌 옆의 창고의 오래된 타일까지 다 바꾸자는 의견으로 통일되어서 오는 10월에 2주간에 걸쳐 대대적인 공사가 있게 됩니다.

현재 10월 20일에 공사를 시작해서 11월 초까지는 공사를 마칠 계획입니다. 그렇기에 10월 후반기 두 주일은 친교식사가 어렵게 되었음을 미리 양해를 구합니다. 대신 이 해가 지나가기 전 새롭게 바뀐 친교실과 부엌을 보게 되어 기대가 됩니다.

이번에 공사를 계획하면서 교회 건물에 대해서 이런 저런 생각을 해 보게 되었습니다. 우리 교회는 전체가 모일 수 있는 예배실과 친교실 공간은 잘 되어 있는 반면 그외 공간들이 조금 애매한 것이 현실입니다. 우선 교인들이 모여 안부를 묻고 교제할 수 있는 로비 공간이 없고, 화장실이 찾기 어려운 구석에 배치되어 있으며, 교회 사무실도 교인들이 쉽게 출입할 수 있는 위치가 아니죠. 감사하게 성가대실, 중고등부 예배실, 어린이 예배실은 잘 마련되었지만, 그외 모임을 위한, 특별히 교육 프로그램을 위한, 교실과 공간이 부족하며, 무엇보다도 엘리베이터 설치로 없어진 유아방을 다시 만드는 것이 시급한 상황입니다. 아울러 여기 저기 쓰기 애매한 dead space가 또한 적지 않습니다. 이런 점을 고려할 때 우리에게 창조적인 아이디어를 통한 창조적인 건물 사용법이 필요하다는 생각을 하게 되었습니다.

그래서 먼저 Dead Space로 남아 있는 공간을 storage로 사용하고, 다른 공간들은 모임을 위한 장소로 최대한 확보하는 지혜가 필요하겠다는 생각을 해 봅니다. 둘째로 친교실의 테이블과 의자를 조금 더 쉽게 옮길 수 있는 구조로 바꿔서 친교실이 다목적으로 사용되어야 하지 않을까 하는 생각도 해 보게 되었습니다. 아울러 방문자들을 위한 signage를 개선할 계획과 예배실에 유아방 설치를 서둘러야 하겠다는 생각을 해 보면서 ...

이런 저런 생각에 마음만 급해서 지난 주에는 여기 저기 전등부터 몇 개 갈아 보았습니다. 계단과 사무실 입구에 있는 전등이 조금 어둡다는 생각을 늘 해왔는데 이번에 조금 더 밝은 LED로 바꿔 보았습니다. 전등 몇 개 갈고 큰 소리 칠 일은 아니지만 ... 천리길도 한 걸음 부터라고 했으니 ... 이제 새롭게 하나씩 바꿔질 한미교회를 다시 한번 기대해 보았으면 합니다.  특별히 45주년을 바라보면서 함께 마음을 모아 새롭게 겉과 속이 힘찬 모습으로 변화되는 우리 한미교회가 되기를 기도합니다! 아멘!

Having our own church building is truly a great blessing. When we remember the hardships of not having a building, there is no need to explain how great a gift it is to have one. Yet, it is also true that with such a blessing comes the responsibility of maintaining it.

Last year, we invested $30,000 to resurface the parking lot and $20,000 to expand and renovate the children’s chapel and choir room. This year, we are preparing for a major renovation of the fellowship hall, which will cost over $50,000. Persistent drainage problems in the kitchen led to an inspection, which revealed that the pipes beneath the fellowship hall had been improperly installed. To correct this, the floor will need to be removed and new pipes laid. After discussion, our Trustees and Church Council agreed that while the floor is open, we should also replace the old tiles in the fellowship hall, kitchen, and adjacent storage room. This two-week renovation is scheduled to begin October 20 and finish by early November.

Because of this, we will not be able to share fellowship meals during the last two Sundays of October. Yet, we look forward with anticipation to welcoming the new year in a newly refreshed fellowship hall and kitchen.

As we planned for this work, I found myself thinking a lot about our building as a whole. While our sanctuary and fellowship hall are spacious enough to gather everyone, other spaces are somewhat limited. We lack a proper lobby for fellowship, restrooms are tucked away in hard-to-find corners, and the church office is not easily accessible. Though we are grateful for the choir room, youth chapel, and children’s chapel, we still need more classrooms for meetings and education. Most urgently, we must restore the nursery that was lost when the elevator was installed. In addition, several areas remain underused as “dead space.” These realities remind us that we need creative ideas to make better use of what God has given us.

Perhaps we can convert unused spaces into storage, free up more rooms for meetings, and redesign our fellowship hall with easily movable tables and chairs for multi-purpose use. We also hope to improve signage for visitors and to prioritize the return of a nursery in the sanctuary area.

Last week, with these hopes in mind, I decided to start small. I replaced a few dim bulbs in the stairwell and near the office entrance with brighter LED lights. It may not be much, but as the saying goes, even a thousand-mile journey begins with a single step. My hope is that little by little, we will be able to bring brighter changes to our Korean American Methodist Church.

As we approach our church’s 45th anniversary, I pray that we will join our hearts together to see our church renewed inside and out — both in the congregation’s spirituality and the physical building - full of fresh strength and vitality for the future. Amen!
