A new bookstore has opened just 1.5 miles from our church. I thought bookstores were closing down these days, but to my surprise, Barnes & Noble, one of the largest bookstore chains in the country, opened a big new store at a shopping center near our church. There is also a fairly large coffee shop inside. If you find the right seat, you can enjoy a beautiful view of Pikes Peak through the large windows. It has become one of my favorite places to stop by, prepare sermons, and read a few books. And, of course, I end up buying a book or two along the way.
Buying books makes me happy. Even if I don't read them all, just seeing those books piling up makes me feel rich somehow. Some people say they get that same feeling when they buy new clothes or fill their refrigerators with groceries. I guess we all have different things that give us that sense of satisfaction. For me, it's books.
On the other hand, I rarely buy clothes. I once heard that Steve Jobs and Mark Zuckerberg, two giants of the tech world, wore pretty much the same outfit every day because they didn't want to "waste" time deciding what to wear. So, a few years ago, I decided to do the same. I've been wearing a black suit with a blue dress shirt (blue being the color of hope) ever since. But last week, I happened to stop by a clothing store and ended up buying a beige dress shirt. I was just going to feel the fabric, but it was so soft that I couldn't resist buying it. Maybe it's because I'm getting older, but these days I find myself drawn to softer clothes ... and I've also started to appreciate flowers.
When I was younger, I thought flowers were a waste of money since they would wilt in just a week. But now, I appreciate them a lot more and I even sometimes buy flowers myself and awkwardly arrange them in a vase in my office. Listen to me rambling on like this ... Maybe I'm just getting sentimental with the autumn season!
As the years go by, our tastes change, and so does the way we see the world. One of my prayers these days is that, as I continue to change with age, those changes will not make me less graceful, but rather help me become a little more mature, a little wiser, and perhaps even a little more admirable through God's Word and grace.
Astronomically speaking, winter officially began at 2:52 a.m. on Saturday, November 7, marking Ipdong, the traditional beginning of winter in the East Asian calendar. Winter has already arrived, and here I am still talking about autumn!
Thanksgiving Sunday is just two weeks away. I pray that this will be a season when our hearts are filled with gratitude as we count, one by one, the many blessings God has given us throughout the year. Two Sundays after Thanksgiving Sunday, we will have our annual Church Conference. It will be a time for us to come together and prepare for the new year, when our church will celebrate its 45th anniversary. I ask you to join us in prayer as we prepare for this special year.
Looking around my office, I see piles of books and papers everywhere, reminding me of all the things I have yet to finish in 2026. As we enter this season of wrapping up the year and preparing for a new one ... I think I'd better put aside my autumn sentimentality and start by cleaning up my office next week!
