When I was doing campus ministry at the University of Chicago, we had two accompanists for our Sunday worship services. One of them was a deacon who was working on his doctorate at the University of Chicago and had studied classical music all his life. He was so devoted to classical music that he once told me that when he was walking down the street in Korea and heard popular music playing somewhere, he would cover his ears because he felt like it was “ruining his ears.”

The church we were renting at the time happened to be a historic church in the area. The sanctuary had beautiful Tiffany stained-glass windows and a magnificent pipe organ. Every Sunday, before worship began, our accompanist would play on that pipe organ music that Bach had composed for the church calendar. How beautiful that music was! As I listened to it, I sometimes felt as though I were sitting right before the throne of heaven. (Ever since, I have used pipe-organ hymns as the prelude music for our early morning prayer services.)

The other accompanist, who played for our praise team, was an undergraduate student studying fashion at an art school. His musical style could not have been more different. He couldn’t even read music, but he could listen to a song and play it on the keyboard by ear. He had an amazing musical talent and could reproduce exactly the same accompaniment he heard on any praise CDs. Thanks to him, even though we were a small church, our praise time was always filled with the kind of energy and grace you might expect from a much larger church. Serving the same church with these two very different musicians taught me just how wide the world of music is—and how wonderfully God can work through gifts that are as different as heaven and earth.

This coming Friday at 7:00 PM, we will have a very special praise concert at our church. Rev. Ja Eok Gu, who is well known for his so-called “ppongjjak” or Korean trot-style praise music, will be joining us for an exciting evening of praise.

I still remember the first time I heard Pastor Gu’s music. I was surprised and fascinated, but more than anything, it was so exciting to discover that we could praise God with “ppongjjak,” too! Ever since then, whenever I was feeling a little down—or sometimes when I was simply in a really good mood—I would find myself humming one of his song, “Atta, Cham Mariyeo! I can hardly believe it!” And I would think, “Wouldn’t it be great if we could invite Pastor Gu for a praise concert someday?” Well, that wish is finally coming true!

Over the years, I had asked around through some Methodist pastors who went to seminary with Pastor Gu to see if there might be a way to invite him. Then I heard that he would be doing his first U.S. tour, so I managed to get in touch with him. As it turns out, he had an opening in his schedule while traveling from California to the East Coast, which made it possible for him to come to Colorado.

There is one more thing that makes me excited. The renovation of our sanctuary sound system, which had been delayed because we were waiting for one final piece of equipment, is finally scheduled to be completed this Thursday. So we will get to enjoy this exciting praise concert with our brand-new sound system! It will truly be a joyful evening of Korean trot-style praise!
