4일간의 “한미연회 개척교회 지도자 수양회”를 은혜 가운데 잘 마쳤습니다. 이번에 이 모임에 잠시 참여하면서 그 어려운 개척교회의 소명을 감당해 가고 계신 여러 목회자 여러분을 진정으로 존경하게 되었고, 그 어려운 길을 가는 이들에게 잠시나마 재충전의 시간을 드리는데 우리 교회가 쓰임을 받을 수 있어서 참 감사했습니다.

이번에 여선교회 회장님들과 회원 여러분이 3일간 저녁식사를 준비해 주시느라 너무 수고가 많으셨습니다. 또한 한미연회의 개척 교회를 후원해 주고 계신 은혜속과 화평속에서 이번에 참석하신 “하나님이 일하시는 교회” 박영관 목사님과 “여섯걸음” 교회의 이상범 목사님께 귀한 식사 대접을 해 주셔서 참 감사했습니다. 다시 한번 섬겨 주신 여러분께 깊은 감사를 드리며, 참석하신 목사님중 한 분이 카톡방에 남겨 주신 감사의 인사를 대신 나눕니다.

“정말 은혜가 아니면 갈 수 없는 ‘교회 개척의 길’을 걷고 있는 우리가 다시 한자리에 모이게 되어 감사했습니다. 서로의 사역 이야기를 나누며 '아! 나만 힘든 것이 아니었구나'라는 위로와 '그럼에도 하나님이 하신다'는 은혜를 함께 맛보는 감사의 시간이었습니다. (중략) 그리고 이번 세미나의 하이라이트! 은혜 넘치는 장소와 '이건 진짜 최고다!' 싶은 음식으로 섬겨 주신 한미교회 성도님들! 정말 감사하고 사랑합니다!

이번 수양회를 통해서 정학진 목사님이란 분의 “축복과 사명의 차이”라는 시를 접하게 되었습니다. 우리 믿음이 무엇인가 다시금 생각케 하는 글이라 일부를 나눕니다.

모야모야병을 앓고 있는 / 15세 소녀의 투병기를 지켜보다가 울었다 / 문득 건강한 것은 축복이 아니라 / 거룩한 부담이다 / 사명임을 깨닫는다.

곰팡이 냄새나는 지하 교회 / 서너 명 교인이 전부인 셋방 교회에서 / 월세 내는 날을 두려워하는 / 미자립 교회가 존재하는 한 / 더 이상 예쁜 건물은 축복이 아니다 / 부담이다. 사명이다.

뼈까지 달라붙는 쇠꼬챙이같이 / 마른 몸을 하고 / 목마른 눈초리로 쳐다보는 / 아프리카 검은 대륙의 저 어린 것들이 있는 한 / 하루 세 끼 따박따박 먹는 것은 / 더 이상 복이 아니다 / 부끄러움이다. (중략)

우리 교회에는 이렇듯 주신 축복을 또한 소명으로 알고 섬겨 주시는 여러분들이 계셔서 참으로 감사합니다. 그 중에 한 분인 Tom Moore 권사님과 최정숙 권사님이 오는 주간에 아리조나로 이사를 가십니다. Tom 권사님은 개척 초기인 1984년부터 42년간 재단 이사, 목회위원, 평신도 대표등 교회에 필요한 일이라면 뭐든지 감당함으로 신실하게 교회를 섬겨 주셨습니다. 매 주일 영어예배의 Greeting과 광고 순서를 맡아 주셨는데, 이제 권사님의 그 따듯한 인사를 듣지 못한다고 생각하니 많이 아쉽네요. 이 자리를 빌려 두 분께 깊은 감사를 드립니다.

아울러 이제 곧 45주년을 맞는 우리 교회가 하나님께서 주신 축복을 소명으로 삼아 끊임없이 나누고 흘려 내보내는 믿음의 역사를 계속해서 이어 가기를 기도합니다. 아멘!

We have just finished a four-day “Korean American Annual Conference Church Planters’ Retreat”. As I spent some time with the “church planting” pastors, I came to have even greater respect for them. I was also very thankful that our church could play a small part in giving them some time to rest, recharge, and be renewed.

I especially want to thank the presidents and members of our Women’s Mission Societies, who worked so hard preparing dinner for three evenings. I am also very grateful to Grace Cell and Peace Cell, who have been supporting church plants in our Korean American Annual Conference, for treating Pastor Young K. Park of “God Is Working Church” and Pastor Sang B. Lee of “Six Steps Church” to wonderful meals during their stay. Once again, I want to express my deep appreciation to everyone who served, and would also like to share a message of thanks that one of the pastors posted in our KakaoTalk group:

“We were so thankful to gather together again as people walking this ‘road of church planting’—a road we could never walk without God’s grace. As we shared stories about our ministries, we found comfort in realizing, ‘Ah, I’m not the only one having a hard time,’ and at the same time, we experienced together the grace of knowing, ‘Even so, God is at work.’ It was truly a time of gratitude (…) And the highlight of this seminar! To the members of Korean American Methodist Church who welcomed us with such a grace-filled place and food that made us say, ‘This is really the best!’—thank you so much! We love you!”

During this retreat, I came across a poem by Rev. Hak Jin Jung titled “The Difference Between Blessing and Calling.” It made me think again about what our faith really means, so I would like to share it with you.

I watched the story of a 15-year-old girl / fighting Moyamoya disease, and I wept / Suddenly I realized that being healthy / is not simply a blessing / It is a holy responsibility / It is a calling.

As long as there are struggling churches / in moldy basement rooms / rented churches with only three or four members / churches that dread the day the rent is due / a beautiful church building / is no longer simply a blessing / It is a responsibility. It is a calling. (…)

I am truly grateful that our church has so many people who see the blessings God has given us as a calling to serve others. Among them are Tom Moore and Jeongsook Choi, who will be moving to Arizona this coming week. Since 1984, the early years of our church, Tom has faithfully served our church for 42 years, taking on whatever responsibilities were needed, including serving as a Trustee, a member of the SPRC, and Lay Leader. Every Sunday, he has also welcomed us with the greeting and announcements during our English worship service. It is hard to imagine not hearing his warm greeting anymore. I would like to take this opportunity to express my deepest gratitude to both of them for their many years of faithful service.

As our church soon approaches its 45th anniversary, I pray that we will continue this legacy — receiving the blessings God has given us as a calling, and sharing those blessings by letting them flow out to others. Thank you for being the channel of God’s blessing! Hallelujah!
