아프리카 시간으로 새벽 3시에 이 글을 쓰고 있습니다. 시차로 인해서 잠이 일찍 깨기도 했지만, 무엇보다도 여러가지 생각에 잠이 쉽게 오지를 않네요.

교단 총회가 열리고 있는 곳은 요하네스버그 중에서도 제일 번화한 지역이라 호텔 방도 (작지만) 깨끗하고 음식도 (거의 매일 같은 메뉴지만) 맛있고, 바로 길 건너 비싼 가게들로 가득 찬 쇼핑몰도 있는, 거의 미국 같은 곳입니다. 그런데 이곳에서 40분정도 떨어진 마을에서 교단 총회와 함께 단기선교팀이 조직되어서 여름성경학교를 일주일간 진행 중인데 그곳은 완전히 다른 세상이라고 합니다.

제 아내가 단기선교팀 일원으로 참가하고 있는데, 매일 몰려오는 600여명의 아이들 중 많은 아이들이 이런 저런 이유로 부모가 없이 친척집에 얹어 사는 고아들이라고 합니다. 하루는 간식으로 아이들에게 바나나를 나눠 주었는데, 바나나를 처음보는 아이들도 있었고, 집에 있는 동생을 주려고 바나나를 반만 먹고 반은 고이 싸서 주머니에 넣는 아이의 모습을 보고 와서는 아내가 많이 마음 아파합니다. 또한 3살 난 예쁜 여자아이 하나가 하루 종일 제 와이프 바짓가랑이를 붙잡고 따라다니는데 그 모습이 너무 애처로워 ‘입양하면 안 될까?’ 하는 아내의 마음을 달래느라 또한 애쓰고 있습니다.

목요일 저녁은 러시아의 허가이 감독님과 함께 온 러시아 연회의 대의원들과 한미연회 대의원들이 함께 저녁 식사를 했습니다. 러시아 대의원 중에 부모님이 충청도/경상도 출신이라는 러시아계 한국인 2세 감리사님도 계셨고, 여름이면 밤 11시까지 해가 지지 않는 백야의 St. Petersburg에서 온 러시아계 한국인 3세 젊은 엄마도 있었고 ... 무엇보다도 놀라운 것은 허가이 감독님을 포함한 대의원 중 많은 사람이 감리교 선교사님에 의해 예수를 믿게 되었고 감리교회가 힘을 모아 세운 신학교에서 공부를 했다는 것입니다. 교회가 공들인 선교의 열매를 보게 되는 것 같아 감사한 시간이었습니다.

무엇보다 기쁜 소식은 이번에 우리 한미연회의 이성현 목사님께서 8명의 GMC 감독중 한명으로 선출된 일입니다. GMC에서는 각 연회마다 감독님이 있는 것이 아니라 60개의 연회를 8개의 감독구로 나눠서 8분의 감독님이 각 감독구의 영적인 지도자로서 섬기는 구조로 되어 있습니다. 이번에 우리 한미연회는 미주의 동북부 연회, 텍사스연회, 유럽의 불가리아연회, 남미의 멕시코 연회, 그리고 아프리카의 케냐 연회등과 함께 제2 감독구에 속하게 되었는데 이 2 감독구의 감독으로 이성현 목사님께서 선출되신 것입니다. 또한 제6 감독구 감독으로 러시아 한인 3세인 허가이 감독님이 선출되어서 8명의 감독중 2명이 한국계 감독이 되는 “경사”가 있게 되었습니다. 재미있게도 한 분은 미국계, 다른 한 분은 러시아계 한국인이어서 한국사람이 뭔가 세계를 아우루는 기분이 드는데 ... 그만큼 또한 무거워진 한인교회의 책임의 무게를 느낍니다.

조금 넓은 세상에 나와보니 ... 교회가 감당하고 있는 많은 일들과 함께, 또한 교회가 감당해야 할 많은 일들을 다시 보게 됩니다. 그런 저런 생각 가운데 마음을 다시한번 다져보게 되는 아프리카에서의 새벽입니다.

I am writing this letter at 3 o’clock in the morning, Africa time. Partly because of jet lag, but more because of so many thoughts going through my mind, I ended up waking up early. The General Conference is being held in one of the busiest areas of Johannesburg. The hotel room is clean and the food is good and right across the street is a large shopping mall filled with expensive stores. In many ways, it almost feels like America.

But about 40 minutes away from here, there is a completely different world. Along with the General Conference, a short-term mission team has been organized, and they are holding a week-long Vacation Bible School in a village there. Wendi is serving as a member of that mission team. She tells me that about 600 children come every day, and many of them are orphans who, for one reason or another, have lost their parents and are now living with relatives. One day, the team gave the children bananas for a snack. Some of the children had never seen a banana before. One child ate only half of the banana, carefully wrapped up the other half, and put it in a pocket to take home to a younger sibling. My wife came back that day with a heavy heart after seeing that. There is also a beautiful three-year-old girl who holds onto my wife follows her around all day long. My wife feels so sorry for her that she has been debating in her tender heart whether to adopt her or not.

On Thursday evening, the delegates from the Korean American Conference and the delegates from the Russian Conference who came with Bishop Eduard Khegay had dinner together. Among the Russian delegates was a second-generation Korean-Russian district superintendent whose parents came from Chungcheong province in Korea. There was also a third-generation Korean-Russian young mother from St. Petersburg, where during the summer the sun does not set until 11:00 at night.

But what impressed me most was that many of the delegates, including Bishop Khegay, had come to believe in Jesus through Korean-American Methodist missionaries and had studied at a seminary established through the support of Korean Methodist churches in the States. It was a wonderful reminder that there are fruit that comes from our faithful investment in missions.

The happiest news of all is that Rev. Jonathan Lee of our Korean American Annual Conference was elected as one of the eight bishops of the Global Methodist Church. In the GMC, there is not a bishop for every annual conference. Instead, the 60 annual conferences are divided into eight episcopal areas, with eight bishops serving as the spiritual leaders of those areas. Our Korean American Conference is part of Episcopal Area 2, together with Northeastern and Texas Conference of the United States, Bulgaria in Europe, Mexico, and Kenya Conference in Africa. And Rev. Lee was elected to serve as the bishop of this episcopal area.

Bishop Khegay, a third-generation Korean-Russian, was also elected bishop of Episcopal Area 6. This means that two of the eight bishops are of Korean heritage—something truly worth celebrating! Interestingly, one is Korean-American and the other is Korean-Russian. It almost makes me feel as though Koreans are reaching across the whole world! And at the same time, it also makes me feel the greater weight of responsibility now placed upon Korean churches.

Coming out into this wider world has helped me see again the many things that are God is doing in and through the church. With all these thoughts rushing through my mind, I greet another morning in Africa.
