아프리카 오는 길이 참 멀었습니다.

지난 목요일 오후 덴버를 출발했는데 그날 저녁 비행기를 갈아타기로 되어 있던 뉴저지에 심한 폭우가 몰아쳐서 뉴저지로 가야 할 비행기가 시카고로 항로를 바꾸게 되었습니다. 그렇게 시카고에서 하루 밤을 보내고 아침 일찍 뉴저지로 왔는데, 그 전날 항공편이 취소된 이들로 인해서 남아공화국 가는 비행기는 다 꽉 찼고, 하루 종일 이리 뛰고 저리 뛰면서 알아본 결과 토요일 밤 비행기의 마지막 남은 자리 두개를 간신히 얻어서 토요일 밤 비행기를 타게 되었습니다. 여러분이 이글을 읽으실 때면 아마도 아프리카에 거의 다 와 있지 않을까 싶습니다.

3일을 꼬박 비행장에서 보내기는 인생에 처음인 것 같습니다. 2년전 코스타리카에서 GMC 총회가 있었을 때 회의 3일째 되는 날 나타난 아프리카 총대 2명을 만난 기억이 납니다. 아프리카에서 코스타리카까지 오는데 6번의 비행기를 갈아타야 했다는 이야기를 들으면서 아프리카 대의원들의 고초에 공감했던 기억이 있었는데, 금년에는 그것을 직접 체험하게 되었네요.

“사람이 온다는 것은 실로 어마 어마한 일이다” 라는 시인의 시 귀가 다시 생각났습니다. 실로 한사람이 온다는 것은 그 사람이 인생 가운데 경험했던 삶과 생각, 그로 인해 축적된 지혜와 삶의 무게가 다 같이 함께 온다는 것이니 그 얼마나 “어마 어마한” 일이겠냐는 의미를 담은 시 귀가 ... 한사람이 온다는 것이 실질적으로 이렇게 “험난할” 수 있다는 것을 경험하면서 다시금 마음에 와 닿습니다.

그렇게 어마 어마한 일이 이번 총회에서 일어나고 있습니다. 실로 “어마 어마한” 삶을 지닌 총대들이 한 명도 아닌 400여명이 모여 7,000여개의 교회에게 영향을 미칠 500개에 가까운 안건을 놓고 7일간 회의를 합니다. 생각해 보니 실로 “어마 어마한” 일이네요. 총회를 위한 여러분의 기도를 다시 한번 부탁드립니다.

오늘 주일은 이재근 목사님께서 1부와 2부 예배 설교를 맡아 주십니다. 다음주일 1부 예배는 홍클리프 권사님이, 2부는 김성태 목사님께서 말씀을 전해주시고, 그 다음주는 페루의 홍종애 선교사님께서 말씀을 전해주시기로 하셨습니다. 나름 어마 어마한 삶을 살아오신 이들의 말씀에 큰 은혜가 있기를 바라면서, 말씀을 전해주시기로 흔쾌히 허락해 주신 여러분께 감사를 드립니다.

총회에 오기전에 대학입학을 앞둔 고등부 학생의 추천서를 한 장 써 주게 되었습니다. 기쁜 마음으로 추천서를 쓰면서 그 학생이 20년도 안 되는 인생을 참 열심히 “꽉 차게” 살았구나 하는 생각을 해 보았습니다. 그러고 보니, 우리 모두 나름 꽉 찬 인생을 위해서 열심히 살아왔고, 열심히 살고 있다는 감사한 생각이 드네요. 하나님의 은혜로 “꾹 눌러 넘치게” 채워지는 여러분의 인생을 축복하면서, 저도 앞으로의 총회 일정을 “은혜로” 꽉 채워 오겠습니다. 벌써 여러분이 그리워지네요. 감사하고 사랑합니다!

It has been quite a long journey to Africa. I left Denver last Thursday afternoon, but that evening, severe thunderstorms hit New Jersey, where I was supposed to catch my connecting flight. Our flight to New Jersey was diverted to Chicago instead. So, I spent the night in Chicago and flew to New Jersey early the next morning.

But because so many flights had been canceled the day before, all the flights to South Africa were completely full. After spending the entire day running around trying to find a way to get there, we finally managed to get the last two available seats on a Saturday night flight. By the time you read this letter, I will probably be almost in Africa.

I think this is the first time in my life that I have spent three full days in airports. Two years ago, when we had the first GMC General Conference in Costa Rica, I remember meeting two delegates from Africa who finally arrived on the third day of the conference. They told me that they had to change planes six times to get from Africa to Costa Rica. At the time, I remember feeling sorry for what our African delegates had to go through. This year, I got to experience a little of it myself.

Along the way, I was reminded of a line from a poem: “When a person comes into your life, it is truly an extraordinary thing.” The poet meant that when one person comes to us, that person does not come alone. Everything that person has experienced in life comes with them—their thoughts, the wisdom they have gained, and the weight of the life they have lived. That is why the coming of one person is such an “extraordinary” thing. After experiencing how physically difficult and complicated it can actually be for one person simply to “come,” those words touched me in a new way.

And something truly extraordinary is happening at this General Conference. More than 400 delegates, each carrying a life filled with their own experiences, stories, and wisdom, are gathering together. For seven days, we will discuss nearly 500 petitions and proposals that will affect some 7,000 churches. When I think about it, this really is an extraordinary gathering. So once again, I ask for your prayers for this General Conference.

Today, Rev. Jae Lee will preach at both our first and second services. Next Sunday, Exhorter Cliff Hong will preach at the first service, and Rev. Daniel Kim will preach at the second service. The following Sunday, Missionary Jong Ae Hong from Peru will bring the message. Each of them has lived a full and remarkable life in their own way, and I pray that we will be greatly blessed through the messages they share with us. I am also very grateful to them for so willingly agreeing to preach while I am away.

Before leaving for the General Conference, I had the opportunity to write a recommendation letter for one of our high school students who is preparing to apply to college. As I happily wrote the letter, I found myself thinking, “She has really lived these not-quite-twenty years of her life fully and faithfully.”

And then I realized that all of us, in our own ways, have been working hard to live lives that are full. What a blessing that is!

I pray that your lives will continue to be filled by God’s grace — “a good measure, pressed down, shaken together and running over.” And I will do my best to fill the days ahead at General Conference with God’s grace as well. Thank you! I already miss you all!
