자녀들의 새학기가 시작되었습니다. 제가 시카고에서 섬겼던 교회에서 유아세례를 주었던 아이가 작년에 대학교에 들어갔다는 소식을 듣고는 세월의 흐름에 놀랐던 기억이 있었는데, 어느새 그렇게 커 버린 아이들이 초등학교를 시작하고, 중학교에 들어가고, 고등학교의 마지막 학년을 시작합니다.

지난 여름 중고등부는 바쁜 시즌을 보냈습니다. 호피 단기선교를 다녀오고, 18명의 학생들이 콜로라도 지역 연합 수련회인 FUSE에 참석해서 은혜를 받고, 어제는 또 12명의 학생들이 여름을 마무리하면서 Water Park에 다녀왔습니다.

중고등부는 여러 학부모님들이 열심으로 후원해 주셔서 장족의 발전을 하고 있음에 감사를 드립니다. 이번 Water Park 행사에도 김기정 성도님 내외가 인도자로 함께 해 주시고, 학생들의 ride도 학부모님들이 거의 다 책임져 주셨다고 들었습니다. 돌아보니 저희 중고등부 부흥에는 학부모님들의 관심과 열정이 절대적이었습니다. 다시 한번 여러 학부모님들과 열심으로 섬겨 주시는 김연미 학부모회 회장님께 감사를 드립니다.

요즈음은 어린이부와 청소년부 사역자를 구하기가 너무 힘듭니다. 한인인구가 적은 콜로라도 스프링스 지역은 그 일이 더 힘들고요. 그런 어려움 가운데 Ashleigh 간사님과 이규림 간사님이 앞장서서 교육목회를 이끌어 주고 계심이 너무나 감사할 뿐입니다. 수고하고 애쓰는 두분 간사님을 위해서 여러분의 많은 협조와 기도를 부탁드립니다.

오늘 예배후에 어린이부 학부모회의가 있습니다. 어린이부는 요즈음 도우미들의 손길로 북적이고 있습니다. 이규림 간사님의 어머님이신 이진희 집사님, 그리고 이혜영 사모님등 여러분이 팀을 이루어 활기찬 어린이 예배를 이끌어 주고 계십니다. 여기에 학부모님들의 도움만 조금 있으면 어린이부도 더욱 활기찬 목회가 되겠기에 여러분의 도움을 요청하는 모임을 갖게 되었으니 학부모님들의 많은 참여를 부탁드립니다.

아프리카 격언에 “아이 하나를 키우는 데는 온 마을이 필요하다” 라는 말이 있습니다. 이 말을 옮겨 보면 “아이 하나를 키우는 데는 온 교회가 필요하다” 라고 바꿔 볼 수 있겠습니다. 다시 한번 교육목회를 위한 온 교회의 관심과 후원, 그리고 기도를 부탁드립니다.

아이뿐 아니라 모든 인생에게 교회가 필요하지 않을까 생각하며 제 삶을 돌아보니 늘 교회가 있었네요. 어렸을 때 다녀서 이름이 생각나지 않는 동네교회로부터, 사춘기때 믿음의 눈을 조금씩 뜨게 해준 노량진 교회, 그리고 입교(견신례)를 받게 해준 성남 교회, 그리고 이민 와서 마음의 고향이 되어준 세광 교회, 신학교를 가게끔 믿음을 지켜준 샴페인/어바나 교회, 목회를 꿈꾸게 해준 한마음 교회와 시카고 대학 한인교회 등등과 함께, 그후 전도사 시절부터 35년 목회 가운데 섬긴 7 교회를 합하여 보니 우리 한미교회가 저의 인생에 있어 14번째 교회가 됩니다. 저의 삶 속에 귀한 생명줄이 되어준 교회가 있음을 감사하며, 여러분의 삶 가운데, 특별히 우리들의 자녀들의 삶 가운데 교회가 더욱 소중한 인생의 동반자요, 휴식처요, 안내자요, 늘 기댈 수 있는 생명의 공동체가 되기를 간절히 소망해 봅니다. 젊음이 가득한 한미교회, 파이팅!

A new school year has begun for our children. I remember being amazed at how quickly time had passed when I heard last year that a child I had baptized as an infant had entered college. And now, before we know it, the children who once seemed so little are beginning elementary school, entering middle school, and starting their final year of high school.

In the midst of all that growing, our Youth Ministry had a busy summer. 7 students participated in the Hopi short-term mission trip, and 18 students attended FUSE, a joint youth retreat for churches in Colorado, and yesterday, 12 students wrapped up their summer with a trip to a water park.

I am very grateful for the tremendous growth of our Youth Ministry made possible in large part by the enthusiastic support of our parents. For this Water Park outing, Mr. and Mrs. Kim accompanied the group as leaders, and I heard that the parents also provided all the transportation for the students. Looking back, the commitment and passion of the Youth Group parents have been essential to the growth of our Youth Ministry. Once again, I want to thank all our parents, and especially Mrs. Shin, our PTA president, for their faithful service. Also, while it is extremely difficult to find children’s and youth pastor these days, we are so blessed that Ms. Ashleigh and Ms. Eden have stepped forward to lead our educational ministries. I ask for your continued support and prayers for these two dedicated leaders who are serving our children and youth so faithfully.

After worship today, we will have a meeting for the parents of our Children’s Ministry. These days, our Children’s Ministry is bustling with the helping hands of many volunteers. Deacon Jinhee Lee, Pastor Eden’s mother, Mrs. Hye-Young Lee, and several others have formed a wonderful team and are leading a lively and joyful children’s worship service. With just a little more help from our parents, I believe our Children’s Ministry can become even more vibrant. So, I invite all our parents to come!

There is an African proverb that says, “It takes a village to raise a child.” Perhaps for us, we could say, “It takes a whole church to raise a child.” Once again, I ask our entire congregation for your interest, support, and prayers for our educational ministries.

Looking back over my own life, I realized that there has always been a church for me. There was the neighborhood church I began attending as a young child; NoRyangJin Church, where my eyes of faith began to open during my teenage years; SungNam Church, where I was confirmed; SaeKwang Church, which became a spiritual home for me after immigrating to America; the Champaign-Urbana church, which helped me hold on to my faith during my college years; Hanmaum Church and the Korean Church at the University of Chicago, where I began to dream of becoming a pastor; and then the seven churches I have served during my thirty-five years of ministry.

When I count them all, Hanmi Church is the fourteenth church that has been part of my life. I am deeply grateful for the churches that have been a lifeline throughout my journey. And it is my heartfelt prayer that our church will also become an important part of your lives, especially in the lives of our children. It is my prayer that our Hanmi Church will become a faithful companion on their life’s journey - a place of rest, a guide along the way, and a life-giving community they can always lean on. Let our church be just that. Amen!
