일주일 후면 호피 단기선교팀이 떠납니다.

저의 지난 32년 목회 기간을 얼추 세어보니 17번의 단기선교/비전트립을 다녀왔네요. 멕시코, 러시아, 북한과 작년에 다녀왔던 페루, 그리고 국내에서는 나바호 인디언 보호구역, 그리고 시카고에서 총기사건이 가장 많이 일어난다던 잉글우드 지역등, 2년에 한번꼴로 다녀온 것 같습니다. 그중 몇 번은 너무 힘들어서 ‘이번이 마지막이다!’ 라며 갔다가, 받은 은혜가 너무 커서 그 다음에 또 부지런히 짐을 쌌던 기억도 있습니다. 러시아가 그랬습니다. 가는 길이 너무 멀어 한 번만 다녀오자 했는데 고려인 할머니들이 “꼭 다시 오라요” 하신 말이 귀에 맴돌아 그 다음해에 또 갔더니 “증말로 또 왔구마” 하며 기뻐하셨던 모습이 잊혀지지 않습니다.

어느 목사님이 네팔 선교를 다녀오셨다가 쓰신 글을 기억하게 됩니다. 다녀오는 시간과 비용을 생각해 보니 차라리 그 돈을 선교헌금으로 보내면 더 유용하게 쓰겠다 싶어 현지 선교사님께 “내년에는 가는 대신 선교비로 보낼께요” 했더니 선교사님께서 정색을 하시면서 “우리를 잊지 않고 찾아 주시는 것이 그 어떤 선교헌금보다 큰 힘이 됩니다” 라고 하셨다는 내용이었습니다.

“사람이 온다는 건 / 실로 어마어마한 일이다” 라는 정현종 시인의 시구가 생각납니다. 누구를 찾아가 준다는 것은 돈으로 환산할 수 없는 많은 것을 포함하기 때문에 때론 아무것도 아닌 것 같은 단기선교가 힘이 되고 중요한 것 같습니다.

지난 주는 단기선교를 위한 바자회로 여러분들의 수고가 많으셨습니다. 당일 이른 아침부터 바자를 위한 텐트를 치고 하루 종일 물건 판매를 위해 90도 가까운 더위를 이겨내며 수고하신 여러분께 감사를 드립니다. 무엇보다도 여선교회 분들의 수고가 크셨습니다. 족발을 삶고, 김밥을 말고, 꽃게를 손질하고, 부추를 다듬고, 전을 부쳐내고, 불고기를 굽고 ... 총회장님을 비롯한 많은 분들이 3일을 꼬박 교회에서 새신 것 같습니다. 감~사합니다!

그 마음들이 이렇게 저렇게 현지의 선교사님에게 전해져 힘이 되고, 그 먼 곳 마을 사람들 마음에 사랑의 복음이 되어 전해지리라 믿습니다.

이제 단기 선교가 일주일 남았습니다. 계속해서 단기선교를 위해서 많이 기도해 주시기를 부탁드리며, 단기선교팀이 아리조나에서 사역하는 동안 이곳에 남은 우리들도 함께 선교에 참여한다는 의미로 “한끼 금식기도”를 진행했으면 합니다. 단기선교팀이 떠나는 20일 월요일 아침부터 마치고 돌아오는 24일 금요일 저녁까지 15끼를 한두분이 한끼씩 맡아 금식하며 기도의 끈을 이어갈 때에 선교팀에게 큰 힘이 되리라 믿습니다. 교회 로비에 기도 사인업표를 마련해 놓았습니다. 한끼씩 기도의 힘을 모아 주시면 감사하겠습니다.

다시 한번 하나님 나라 귀한 선교 사역에 이런 저런 모습으로 마음을 다해 참여해 주시는 여러분께 깊은 감사를 드립니다. 여러분의 수고가 하나님 나라를 펼쳐가는데 귀하게 쓰임 받는 줄 믿습니다. Missio Dei!

In just one week, our Hopi short-term mission team will be heading out.

As I looked back over the past 32 years of my ministry, I realized that I have participated in seventeen short-term mission trips and vision trips. They have taken me to Mexico, Russia, North Korea, Peru (just last year), the Navajo Nation here in the United States, and even to Englewood in Chicago, once known as the most dangerous place in the States with the highest rates of gun violence.

A few of those trips were so physically demanding that I returned home saying, "That was my last one!" Yet the grace I received was so overwhelming that before long I found myself packing my bags again. Russia was one of those places. The journey was so long that I told myself I would only go once. But the words of the elderly Koryoin (ethnic Korean) grandmothers kept echoing in my ears: "Please come back again." So I returned the following year, and I can still picture their joyful smiles as they exclaimed, "You really came back!"

I also remember reading an account written by a pastor who had returned from a mission trip to Nepal. After considering the time and expense involved, he told the missionary there, "Next year, instead of coming, I'll simply send the money as a mission offering." The missionary replied with all seriousness, "The fact that you remember us and come to see us gives us more strength than any financial support ever could." Those words remind me of a line from the Korean poet Jeong Hyeon-jong: "For a person to come to another person is truly an extraordinary thing." Visiting someone carries a value that can never be measured in dollars. Perhaps that is why a small short-term mission trip often becomes a tremendous source of encouragement and hope.

Last week, many worked so tirelessly to make our mission fundraiser a success. For bazaar the men's group pitched tents early in the morning and there are some who served the entire day under the temperatures nearing 90 degrees. Thank you for your sacrificial service. Our Women's Mission, in particular, carried an enormous load—boiling pork hocks, rolling kimbap, preparing blue crabs, trimming garlic chives, frying Korean pancakes, grilling bulgogi, and so much more! I think many of them, including the president of the Women's Mission, practically lived at the church for three straight days to prepare for the mission food bazaar! Thank you so very much! I believe every act of love offered here will somehow find its way to our missionaries on the field, strengthening and encouraging them, and will also be carried into the hearts of people in distant communities as the love of God.

Now only one week remains before our mission team departs. Please continue to keep the team in your prayers. I would also like to invite those of us remaining at home to participate in this mission together through "One-Meal Fasting Prayer." From Monday morning, July 20, when the team leaves, until Friday evening, July 24, when they return, there will be fifteen mealtimes. If one or two people would commit to fasting and praying for just one meal each, together we can maintain an unbroken chain of prayer throughout the mission. I truly believe this will be a tremendous source of strength and encouragement for our team. A sign-up sheet has been placed in the church lobby. I would be deeply grateful if you would prayerfully consider signing up for one meal!

Once again, thank you for participating so wholeheartedly in God's mission through your prayers, your service, your giving, and your love. I have no doubt that our faithful labor is being used by God to advance His kingdom. Missio Dei!
