One of the many blessings of living in Colorado is the abundance of trails that invite us into the mountains. Even here in Colorado Springs, beautiful hikes such as Pulpit Rock and Palmer Park are just minutes away. Venture a little farther west, and you'll discover countless trails—Seven Bridges Trail being just one of many—that reward those willing to spend a few hours among God's magnificent creation.

Last week, I felt my heart being drawn back to the mountains. Partly, I wanted to see how much strength had returned after my recent illness. Partly, the string of beautiful summer days simply made me long for the trails again. So I set out for the Mt. Muscoco Trail in North Cheyenne Cañon Park. And standing atop the 8,000-foot summit and looking across the Front Range, I found my heart opening once again before the grandeur of God's handiwork. The worries that had quietly settled in during my illness seemed to melt away beneath the vastness of His creation. I had begun the 4.2-mile hike telling myself that I would turn back if it became too difficult. Yet, by God's grace, I completed the entire trail in two and a half hours. Hallelujah!

Near the final stretch of the climb, I noticed a newly built staircase that had been carved into the hillside. The logs supporting the earthen steps were still golden with fresh-cut wood, a sign that someone had just built them. Looking at those steps, I found myself thinking about the people whose hands had made this trail. Many years ago, I knew a husband and wife who both taught at a high school, who, every summer volunteered at one of our National Parks. I had imagined they spent their days welcoming visitors or answering questions at an information desk. Later I learned that their work was far more demanding. They repaired damaged trails and built new ones. As I stood before those new steps, I imagined the people who had carried heavy timbers more than 7,000 feet up the mountain, trimmed each log, drove spikes deep into the earth, and packed the soil beneath the blazing sun. For a brief moment, I stopped walking simply to give thanks for people I would never meet.

This week, our church celebrates its 44th anniversary. Hidden throughout these forty-four years are countless men and women of faith who quietly prepared the way for those who would follow. They leveled the ground. They built the steps. They constructed bridges. They purchased this church building, renovated its rooms, brought in new chairs, installed sound and video systems, repaired the parking lot, prepared worship every Sunday, built the altar in prayer every morning, taught our children, fed our young people, and faithfully served in ways that only God fully knows. Today, I hope we will pause to remember them with grateful hearts.

And we also need to remember that there are trails waiting to be built. May God help us become a church that prepares the way for those who will come after us. When someone finds themselves climbing the difficult mountains of life, may the path beneath their feet be a little stronger because we walked ahead of them. May the road leading toward the Kingdom of God be a little clearer because we faithfully marked the way. We do not know who those future travelers will be. They may be our children or grandchildren. They may be people we will never meet in this life. Yet one day, when we meet them in our Father's house, I pray that our hearts will be filled with joy as we discover that some small part of their journey was made easier because we faithfully prepared the trail.

With that hope, as we celebrate forty-four years of God's faithfulness, we tighten our shoelaces once again and set our faces toward the trail that leads to our forty-fifth year. Amen!
