한미연회에 다녀왔습니다. 한미연회가 구성된 후 세번째 맞게 되는 이번 연회는 “예수의 마음으로 함께 가자” 라는 주제아래 뉴저지 베다니 교회에서 3박 4일간 열렸습니다. 전국에 흩어져 있던 60개 교회의 목회자, 평신도 대표 150여명이 모여 여러 회무를 처리하고 저녁에는 찬양과 말씀, 기도로 뜨거운 예배를 올려 드리는 은혜의 시간이 되었습니다.

연회에서 저는 새로운 목회 후보생들을 돌보고 심사해서 안수받는 자리까지 인도하는 “목회/안수 위원회” 위원장일을 맡고 있습니다. 전에 있었던 교단에서 안수 위원회 일을 12년 감당했었는데, 새 교단에서도 그 일을 맡게 되었네요. 저는 목회/안수 위원회 일을 하면서 참 많은 은혜를 받습니다. 무엇보다도 새롭게 안수받는 이들을 심사하면서 매년 저 자신의 안수를 돌아보는 기회가 되기에 감사하고, 또한 안수 후보자들의 신앙 여정을 들으면서 그들 한 사람 한 사람의 삶 가운데 역사하시는 하나님의 세심한 손길을 보게 되는 것이 너무나 은혜가 됩니다. 진정 여러 다른 삶의 현장에 있는 이들을 부르셔서 하나님 나라 귀한 일을 맡겨 주시는 하나님의 은혜의 손길은 진정 놀랍기만 합니다.

목회/안수 위원장 일을 맡고 있기에 연회 하루전에 가서 회의를 준비하고, 또 연회가 끝난 후 하루 더 머물며 연회 리더십 임원회 모임메 참여해야 했기에 목요일부터 있었던 이번 여름성경학교 (VBS)에 함께하지 못한 아쉬움이 컸습니다. 하지만 이번 6월부터 어린이부 간사를 맡아 준 이규림 간사님과 이번에 VBS Co-Director로 수고해 주신 왕희진 성도님등 준비팀이 준비를 너무 잘 해 주셔서 여름성경학교가 큰 은혜 가운데 진행되었다는 소식을 듣게 되어 많이 기쁘고 감사합니다.

이번에 특별히 청년부, 중고등부에서 교사 및 도우미로 대거 참여해 도와 주셔서 VBS가 활발히 진행 되었다고 들었습니다. 이 자리를 빌어 Ashleigh 중고등부 간사님과 청년부를 이끄시는 김성태 목사님, 그리고 청년부와 중고등부 회원 여러분께 깊은 감사를 드립니다. 또한 학부모회와 교육부에서 많은 기도와 식사 준비등 아끼지 않는 후원을 보내 주셨는데, 이 또한 감사하지 않을 수 업네요. 감~사합니다!

코비드로 인해 침체되었던 어린이부 사역과 중고등부 사역이 다시 활성화되고 있는 모습을 보면서 기쁘고 감사한 마음 금할 수가 없습니다. 이번에 중고등부는 Ashleigh 간사님을 중심으로, 또한 어린이부는 이규림 간사님을 중심으로 새롭게 목회팀을 구축하게 되어 마음이 또한 든든합니다. 그와 함께 교육부가 힘들고 어려울 때 신실함 가운데 교육목회를 지켜 주신 홍클리프 권사님, 이마이클 전도사님, 그리고 구룽 목사님등 여러분을 기억하며 또한 감사를 드립니다. 아울러 교육부장으로서 아끼지 않는 기도로 지난 몇년간 교육부를 지탱해 주신 박미숙 권사님, 그리고 교사로 말없이 섬겨 주고 계시는 John Shin 선생님, 그리고 김연미, 최대호 중고등부와 어린이부 학부모회 회장님을 비롯한 학부모회 여러분을 기억하며 감사를 드리지 않을 수 없네요. 여러분의 기도와 사랑의 손길 가운데 교육부 목회의 열매가 하나 둘 늘어남을 보면서 기쁨의 감사를 드립니다. 여러분, 감사합니다!

올 여름 첫 행사를 이렇게 힘차게 시작했으니 야외예배, 선교바자회, 단기선교등 나머지 여름행사들에 대한 기대도 커집니다. 그 기대를 마음에 담아 한번 크게 외쳐봅니다. “젊음의 열기”가 가득한 한미교회! 가즈아! 아멘!

I have just returned from the Korean American Annual Conference. This year marked the third annual conference since the formation of the Korean American Conference, and it was held for four days and three nights at Bethany Church in New Jersey under the theme, “Let Us Go Together with the Heart of Jesus.” About 150 pastors and lay delegates representing 60 churches from across the country gathered to conduct the business of the conference, and each evening, we were blessed with powerful worship services filled with praise, the Word, and prayer.

At the conference, I serve as the chair of the Board of Ordained Ministry, which is responsible for guiding, evaluating, and preparing ministry candidates for ordination. In my previous denomination, I also served on the Board of Ordained Ministry for twelve years, and now I find myself continuing that same work in our new denomination. Serving in this role is always a source of great blessing to me. Each year, as I interview and evaluate new candidates for ordination, I am given an opportunity to reflect on my own ordination and calling. Also, listening to the faith journeys of these candidates allows me to witness God’s  gracious hand at work in calling each one of them from such diverse walks of life for the work of His Kingdom.

Because of my responsibilities as chair of the Board, I had to arrive a day early to prepare for meetings and remain an extra day afterward for a conference leadership meeting. As a result, I I could not participate in this year’s Vacation Bible School, which was a big disappointment for me. However, I was delighted to hear that VBS was a great success, due to Ms. Kyu, who began serving as our Children’s Ministry Director this month, and Ms. Heejin, who faithfully served as Co-Director, along with the entire planning team, who did an outstanding job preparing for the event. I am deeply grateful for their dedication and hard work. Thank you!

I also heard that many members of our Young Adult and Youth Ministries served as teachers and helpers, bringing tremendous energy and vitality to VBS. I would like to express my sincere thanks to Ms. Ashleigh, our Youth Director, Pastor Daniel, who leads our Young Adult Ministry, and all of our youth and young adult volunteers. In addition, our PTA and Education Committee provided generous support through prayer, meal preparation, and countless other acts of service. For all of this, I am truly thankful.

It fills my heart with joy to see our Children’s and Youth Ministries, which were negatively impacted during the COVID years, becoming vibrant and active once again. I am especially encouraged that we now have new ministry teams in place, with Ms. Ashleigh leading the Youth Ministry and Ms. Kyu leading the Children’s Ministry. At the same time, I want to remember and thank those who faithfully sustained these ministries through difficult seasons—Exhorter Cliff Hong, Evangelist Michael Lee, Pastor Gurung, and many others. I am also grateful to Exhorter Misook Park, who has faithfully supported our educational ministries with much prayer as Chair of Education for the past few years. I also wish to thank John Shin, who quietly and faithfully serves as a teacher, as well as Yeonmi Kim and William Choe, the presidents of our Youth and Children’s PTAs, together with all the parents who have faithfully supported these ministries. Seeing the fruit of educational ministry increase little by little through your prayers and loving service fills my heart with gratitude and joy. Thank you, everyone!

Since we have begun our first summer event with such enthusiasm and blessing, the anticipation for the rest of the summer continues to grow. Picnic Worship Service, the Mission Bazaar, the Short-Term Mission Trip, and many other events lie ahead of us. With that excitement in my heart, I want to shout out: “Youth-full Hanmi Church — Let’s Goooooo!” Amen!
